Use Google profiles for some free SEO juice

This is a great way to get some personal branding along with some free backlinks… Think of it as a “free gift” from Google itself.

If you didn’t already know, Google has a service called “Google Profiles” that makes it easier for people to search for you and learn more about you.

It literally takes a few minutes to set up and it’s completely free. Google is integrating this into more and more services like Google Reader and Google Maps.

Now, from an SEO perspective you should also be concerned for two reasons:

  1. Profile appears when people search for your name
  2. Possible backlinks

Let me explain. When I completed my profile and submitted it, my profile appeared in the Google search result for my name, “raymond fong”, literally 2 minutes later.

So if you’re concerned about branding (and you should be), this is just another social media profile you can add to your arsenal to cover the search engines with the media YOU control.

Also, in the profile itself, you have spaces where you can put links in your profile.

These links are NOT “nofollow”, which means they help add some SEO juice to the websites you point them to (so make sure you use relevant anchor text). Now, profiles don’t have that much pagerank (yet)… But it doesn’t hurt, huh?

So go ahead and take 5 minutes out of your day and set up your Google profile. Trust me, it’s a doddle 🙂

PS When filling in your URLs, don’t forget to use some deep linking and use some good anchor text!
