What is an N95 respirator mask?

Disposable respirators have received increased attention of late with the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, although they have long been used for other purposes, including occupational safety. N95 refers to a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) classification that is assigned to masks that meet a specific minimum standard for the transmission of particulate matter. The N95 respirator is designed to filter up to 95% of airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger that could otherwise enter the wearer’s nose and mouth directly. These masks can also be used by people who have a contagious disease to prevent particles from escaping the wearer’s nose and mouth and putting others at risk. While these masks do not protect against particle transmission with 100% accuracy, they can be effective in preventing the spread of infection.

N95 masks can be purchased with or without a valve to facilitate breathing. Optimal protection is achieved when the respirator mask fits snugly over the face, covering the nose and mouth without leaving gaps along the edge. Respiratory masks must fit the user correctly and must not be obstructed by facial hair or jewelry. A poorly fitted respirator has a greater potential to allow airborne particles to enter through the gaps along the edges of the mask, providing lower levels of protection against inhalation or spread of particles than a well-fitted one. .

Respiratory masks are widely used for occupational safety and are particularly common in healthcare and industrial facilities. Masks used in the workplace must be NIOSH approved, which means they meet the minimum standards set by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The intended purpose should be considered when purchasing respirator masks. The different types are designed for specific purposes and offer different levels of protection. Another consideration is whether the mask contains latex, an allergen for some people. Latex-free N95 respirators are available and will be marked as such.
