The Forsaken Undead: A Brief History
The Forsaken are a faction of humanoids and Undead Elves that were freed from the Lich King’s control by the Banshee Sylvanas, but still retain the full powers of the Scourge. They serve Sylvanas, the Banshee Queen, and admire her for freeing them from the Lich King’s rule and giving them a new home in Lordaeron.
Sylvanas was once a Ranger General in the High Elf army, having died four years earlier in a battle against the Scourge and raised as a Banshee by the Lich King and forced to follow his orders, but when her power weakened during the events that surrounded the Frozen Throne, Sylvanas managed to free herself from the clutches of Prince Arthas. She also freed many other undead and recruited powerful allies from the Burning Legion and surrounding ogre clans.
Sylvanas then defeated an attempt by the three Dreadlords, Balnazzar, Varimathras, and Detheroc to regain control of the undead forces in Lordaeron, killing two and forcing the third Varimathras into her service in exchange for sparing his life. Sylvanas named her new force the Forsaken and proclaimed herself Queen, and the Undead established their capital in the crypts below Lordaeron’s capital city. Her extensive subterranean realm is called the Undercity. The Forsaken have allied themselves with the Horde, though both sides mistrust each other, they have a common enemy in the scourge.
The Icon of Torment, which is the Forsaken Crest, symbolizes the leader of the Undead Sylvanas Windrunner: the “shattered face”, the spent arrows, the tears, and the raven on the shield are all symbols of the Undead Forsaken. . The undead are represented by worn chains that break off the Horde’s shield.
