The diversity of micronations

Micronations are usually expressions of political protest, theoretical experimentation, personal entertainment, artistic expression or the performance of criminal activities. Some micronations issue postage stamps, coins, and medals, have flags, and issue passports. The latest list of micronations reports how diverse they are, both in location and in political and social alliance.

The Republic of Whangamomona was formed as a promoter of tourism in 1989, in a rural New Zealand town. Locals were disappointed when the government revealed plans to move the district boundaries from the area. A goat and a poodle are among the elected presidents. Visitors receive a passport from Whangamomona.
