Science Fair Projects – Complete Guide to a Winning Science Project – Step 2 – Topic Research

I’m going to point out some helpful tips to help make successful science fair projects. With a little help, you should easily be able to do a great project!!

If you’re still not sure how to choose a theme, let me help you.

  1. It is very important to make sure that you choose an interesting topic for your science fair project. After all, you will have to do a lot of research and experiment. Here are some general sample themes:
    • seedlings
    • animals
    • Climate
    • Outer space
  2. Obviously, you don’t want your topic to be too broad. Therefore, think about what interests you, and then narrow it down. For example, if you are interested in plants, think of something a little more specific. You may be interested in the differences between growing a plant outdoors and a plant indoors.
  3. Now that you’ve settled on something a little more specific, it’s time to take it a step further. Think of ways you can reduce even that. It is very important to be as exact as possible. Think of a very, very specific question that you would like answered. For example, what is the difference between petunias that grow indoors and petunias that grow outside?

So you have the theme. Now is the time to do some research.

Here are the three main types of science fair projects:

  1. Investigation

    • Ask yourself questions and try them!
    • Observe the differences between a plant that lives outside in the sun and a plant that lives inside in a dark room.
  2. Use a kit/model

    • Any science or craft store should help with this.
    • aircraft models
  3. Demonstrate and experiment with a scientific principle.

And most importantly, make sure you use the scientific method!

If you’ve forgotten what it is, I’ll break it down for you one more time…

  1. Purpose: – Ask yourself a question. What do you want to find out or prove?
  2. Hypothesis: – predict a possible answer to your question
  3. Procedure:- investigate and experiment
  4. Results: This is where you can make graphs, tables, diagrams, etc. to represent all your hard work
  5. Conclusion: You can now talk about what you have learned from doing the project and list any additional questions you may have.

Some research tips.

Look around

This seems so obvious, but it is so true. Look around you and ask yourself some questions. Statements beginning with “I wonder” are great starting points. Look and listen to those around you. You will probably get some great ideas.

Every day you go through many different experiences that are worth trying. Think about the people and environment you constantly interact with. Are you curious about the weather? What about plant life? Use everyday experiences and interactions to generate an idea for a project.

Use scientific journals

Science magazines are a great way to find ideas for your science fair projects. For example, maybe you’ve read an article about bears and hibernation. You may be wondering why bears need to hibernate and other animals don’t. Scientific journals are excellent sources of research because they can help answer very specific questions.
