Korean vehicle parts

The Korean auto industry is one of the largest in the world. Today it ranks fifth in terms of production volume and sixth in terms of export volume. Originally simply engaged in assembling parts, which were imported from Japan and the United States, Korea is now one of the most advanced auto-producing nations in the world. The industry produces various internal models, showing not only its capabilities in terms of design, performance and technology.

The Korean automobile industry began in 1955, when Choi Mu-seong, along with his three brothers, installed an engine in a modified American Jeep and created the first Korean car, called “Sibal,” which means new beginning.

Then, in 1960, Sinjin Automobiles created the Sinjin Publica, which was made under a license agreement with Toyota. For the development of the Korean auto industry, the Korean government declared the “Automotive Industry Promotion Policy”. As a result, foreign automakers were prevented from operating in the Korean nation, except in the case of joint ventures with local trading companies. The efforts led companies, which were involved with other businesses, to enter the auto industry. This led to the formation of three large companies in 1962, namely Kyeongseong Precision Industry, Ha Dong-hwan Automobile Industry Co., and Saenara Automobile. As it stands, Saenara Automobile was the first automobile manufacturer in Korea, which was equipped with the latest assembly facilities.

Later, Kyeongseong Precision Industry was changed to “Kia Industry”, while Ha Dong-hwan Automobile Industry Co. became SsangYong Motor Company. In 1965 Asia Motors Company was created and in 1968 Hyundai Motor Company was formed in technical cooperation with Ford Motor Company. However, during this period, these companies were engaged solely in automobile assembly, importing parts from their partners abroad. Then, in 1972, Shinjin and General Motors formed a joint venture, General Motors Korea, which was later renamed Saehan Motors in 1976.

In 1975 the Hyundai Pony was produced, the first car developed in Korea. Hyundai Motors did this after hiring George Henry Turnbull, who previously worked for the British Leyland Motor Corporation, as vice president. This car consisted of styling by Italdesign, press machine from France, transmission and engine from Mitsubishi, trim from Ogihara Mold Company, technology transfer from Perkinson, and funding from Barclays and France Suez.

Hyundai achieved another first with the export of the Pony to the Republic of Ecuador in 1976, making Hyundai the first Korean car to be exported. Then in 1982, Saehan Motors was acquired by the Daewoo Group and was later renamed Daewoo Motors.

The 1979 energy crisis caused a rough patch for the Korean automobile industry. The Korean government tried to address this situation with its “Automobile Industry Rationalization Policy”. The government also postponed the liberalization of car imports. All these steps greatly helped the Korean auto industry and helped it to recover the losses accumulated due to the recessive condition at that time.

By the 1980s, several new developments took place, and the Korean auto industry was now mainly concentrating on developing mass production systems, keeping the export aspect in mind. In 1986, Hyundai Motors entered the US market with Excel, which became extremely popular. In fact, it set a record for the sale of the largest number of cars in the first year of business.
