An indica delta is a rare and exotic type of daisy plant, also known as Dogbane or Hoguetia. It grows in the southern parts of Mexico near the Guadalajara Desert. It is one of the least known members of the lily family, with only seven known species in the world.

The name “Delta” comes from the Greek words delta (reek) and akton (angel). When translated, it means “wing”. The flower itself has black petals and white blooms. Its bell-shape petals are lined with a whitish colored cortilage, which is the plant’s vocal apparatus. A striking feature of this species is its long stringy rhizome, which can grow up to three feet long.

Ilea indica Delta occurs naturally in Mexico’s Sonoran Desert and it is so named because of the long skinny flower that resembles a duck. While it has long narrow shoulders and a short lance-shaped leaf, its flowers can be long and pendulous. The flowers usually open with a trumpet-like call. It was named after a Spanish physician and explorer, Dr. van de Leben, who used the plant to improve health in his desert villages. Some experts believe that the sweet fragrance of the flower helped relieve desert fever during his journeys.

Ilea indica Delta grows wild in many regions in Mexico, including the Sinaloa, Oaxaca, Jalisco, and Sonora areas. The plant flourishes in humid and hot conditions, which explains why it is native to those areas. It has also been reported to have some medicinal qualities, including being an astringent. One book describes the use of the plant as a diarrhea remedy. It would not be surprising to see other uses for this herb as well. It certainly does make a nice plant to have in your herb garden.

Like most herbs, Ilea indica Delta grows best planted from seed. It takes about twelve months for the plant to produce seeds. Once sowing, keep the pot in the same position it was in before planting, and water well throughout the growing season. As the plant grows, make sure to remove any dead flowers or leaves. Remove any weeds and support the plant until it develops a firm root system, at which time it will flower and blossom for the first time.
