Bathroom Sink Buying Guide
The bathroom sink and faucet are an important part of any well-designed bathroom. The right bathroom sink can be both functional and modern. The most common styles of bathroom sinks are listed below.
Types of sinks
Self Rim Sinks
These sinks come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and hole configurations. They are mounted above the countertop with an exposed edge and can be used with all types of countertops.
Undermount Sinks
It installs under a solid surface countertop, such as granite, marble, stone, or man-made material, such as Corian, and does not have an “edge.” Counter-mounted or wall-mounted faucets are common with this design; therefore the number of faucet holes is not a factor in this sink application.
Pedestal sinks are freestanding sinks.
These sinks sit on their own bases. These sinks are great space savers, making them ideal for small bathrooms and powder rooms. When selecting a pedestal sink, be sure to consider the finish of any exposed plumbing fixtures (drain and supply lines) underneath and match them to your faucet.
ship sinks
They usually sit on top of a counter or piece of furniture and come in various shapes and designs. Wall-mounted or tall vessel filler faucets that provide adequate clearance over the rim of the sink are common faucets for this application. Some vessel sinks come with pre-drilled holes so the faucets can be mounted directly to the vessel.
console sinks
They combine the style of a pedestal and provide larger counter areas. Console sinks come complete with (2) or (4) support legs. The plumbing under the sink will be visible, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing fixtures below and match them to your faucet.
vanity tops
A one-piece countertop that has a built-in sink and is made of man-made materials, such as Corion. These sinks do not come with bases, please make sure you know the exact dimensions of your vanity cabinet to ensure a proper fit. Tops are typically up to 1″ larger than the vanity they sit on, providing a slight overhang.
vanities
These are marble countertops with a sink and carved wooden cabinets/bases. Cabinet styles add plenty of storage space and come in a variety of sizes, colors and finishes, adding a stylish touch to any bathroom.
wall-hung sinks
These are very popular in smaller bathrooms because they hang directly on the wall and save floor space. They can be installed at any height on a flat wall or in a corner and are often offered with an optional towel rail.
Materials to consider
Vitrified porcelain and fireclay sinks – A ceramic-based material with a smooth, glossy finish that is highly durable. These sinks come in a wide range of colors that coordinate with other bathroom accessories.
glass sinks – Most are made of tempered glass, which is stronger than you might expect. Glass sinks come in many contemporary and eclectic designs.
Enameled Cast Iron Sinks – These are made of solid cast iron, coated with a deep enamel surface. These sinks are extremely heavy, durable and resistant to almost any type of structural damage and are available in a wide variety of colors.
stainless steel sinks – Most are made of 18 or 20 gauge steel and are very strong. Some are covered with a soundproofing material that reduces noise. A great option if you are looking for an urban, contemporary or modern style bathroom.
solid surface materials – Available in a variety of colors and can imitate granite and other high-end stones. They are resistant to heat and stains. Although not completely scratch proof, scratches are easily removed.
