Baby Shower Cakes – How to Make a Diaper Cake Centerpiece
To make a diaper cake centerpiece, you will need the following materials.
- 2 packs of size 2 diapers.
- Little rubber bands, the ones you find with hair items.
- some baby items like a small stuffed animal, passy, rattle and anything else you want to put in there.
- You’ll need some sort of wide ribbon – Dollar stores carry this if you catch it on the way in. You will probably need about 4 rolls.
- Shrink wrap bag can also be found at dollar stores.
- Cardboard background to cut in a circle.
- 3 packs of gift bag fillers.
- Fabric if you want to cover cake layers. A yard for each layer should be good.

Now that you’re ready to make your first baby cake, follow the steps and you’ll be an expert in no time.
- Diapers: Each diaper should be rolled back and then fastened with an elastic band. Continue until you have them all rolled up. DO NOT USE TAPE. Damage the diapers and they won’t work.
- The bottom layer is the largest layer. Have someone help you hold them in place, or use something that is round and shallow. I used a frying pan.
- After placing them in the pan, take a piece of curly ribbon to hold the diapers in place. Make it very tight by wrapping it around the outside of the diapers in the pan.
- Repeat step 3 with the next three layers, each getting smaller with each layer. I found pans that I could use for the other layers.
- You can use fabric to cover each layer if you want to use large pins at the bottom of the layers so you don’t have to use tape.
- Take all the little items you want to put on the cake and tape or pin them in place.
- Take your wide ribbon and wrap it around each layer.
- Cover the round piece of cardboard with one of the fabric colors of your choice.
- You can put some gift bag stuffing between each layer or just leave it on. Either way is fine.
- Place the cake in a shrink wrap bag and tie at the top with a curly ribbon.
- Make a large bow and tie it to the top of the cake. After tying it up, you can tie a curly ribbon with the big ribbon.
- Get a hair dryer and use the hot/high setting and blow air into the shrink wrap bag so it’s tight around the cake.
Now you have made your own diaper cake. If you don’t have time to make your own, I’m always taking orders.
