Wow! Diving on the Big Island; Kona Coast from Himonyou Hawaii

Wow! What a wonderful place for snorkeling and diving the Big Island of Hawaii is, Kona was nicknamed the Gold Coast as it would look in the water and would be shimmering gold with the tremendous schools of yellow tang, even today you can see how large schools of these fish. Hawaii is unique in that 25% of the fish found here are only found here. It is not uncommon to count more than 150 different species of fish in Himonyou. Turtles, dolphins and stingrays are regularly seen by divers and snorkelers from Big Island Hawaii in Himonyou.

Boat dives are the norm in Hawaii, but one exception is the famous 2-pass at Himonyou or the City of Refuge, which has more than 150 different species of fish. It is not uncommon to see turtles as they navigate eating the grasses and mosses that grow along the shore. The Picasso triggerfish, one of the most colorful reef fish, also known as the lagoon triggerfish, is found on the left side, if you are looking deep into around 15 feet of water, so even snorkelers they can see them. You can find frogfish that look like rocks when they age and stonefish that look like rocks, hence the name, but you need to be careful as stonefish have poisonous spines.

Another thing that you may not want to play with is eels, they are not aggressive but their favorite food is octopus and they have poor eyesight, so they will find your hand quite appetizing. There are many different types here, from dwarf eels to giant moray eels, yellow and white mouths and green-headed moray eels are quite common. Another great find here are the very hard to spot leaf scorpions that look like leaves but have the same type of eyes as stonefish, which look like what I assume the monolith called TMA from 2001 to Space Odyssey would look like when you looked except The difference here is that if Dave looked, he would say “Wow, that’s full of fish” instead!
