The functions of a lawyer
The following are six main points that highlight the functions of a lawyer.
1) Representation of clients in court, especially when a third party, such as the State or another person, files charges against the client in relation to crimes or criminal actions allegedly carried out by the client. Otherwise, attorneys draft documents against a criminal who is believed to have violated the client’s rights and represent the client in court.
2) Drafting of documents and carrying out legal research on behalf of the client, such as the drafting of briefs and the investigation of relevant facts related to a particular case. Most of the hard work is done by the lawyer, while the clients simply have to show their face.
3) Provide the client with legal advice on the actions to be taken, also after due research on the law or the constitution regarding a particular situation in question. The attorney advises the client on the best course of action to take to best resolve the situation without breaking the law.
4) Obtaining patents and copyrights to protect customer’s intellectual property, especially regarding business. An idea, trade secret, or important chemical formula falls into this category. The attorney goes to great lengths to assist the client in formally registering the products with the respective government or governing body in order to receive the highest level of protection under the law.
5) Execute the last wishes of the deceased, such as a written will stating their precise wishes in black and white, a trust, etc. The lawyer helps these wishes to be fulfilled to the letter.
6) Prosecuting criminal suspects in court: This applies if the lawyer works for an arm of the government, for example the Police Department, the Department of Justice or the District Attorney’s Office.
