Calcium in milk: the advantages and disadvantages of consuming calcium in milk

Dairy products, especially those made with cow’s milk, are an essential part of a balanced diet. Milk is very important for growing children for the proper development of their bones, teeth, and muscles. The calcium in milk is easily absorbed into the bloodstream with the help of certain enzymes found in milk and thus provides instant benefits.

Pure milk is rich in calcium and other important and useful minerals. People who live in the countryside are healthier and live longer lives than people who live in cities because the former group consumes milk in its pure form. Nature has included all the important nutrients in milk for its own digestion. Even skim milk made by mixing water with milk is more beneficial than the milk we drink from cartons.

The reason why people like us who drink milk regularly are still deficient in calcium is the pasteurization process. Pasteurized milk is not only low in calcium but also difficult to digest. Therefore, the calcium in milk is not absorbed into the bloodstream. Also, sugar and salt increase the rate of calcium loss through urine.

The calcium in milk is also rendered useless when combined with the phosphorous found in many high-protein foods. Coffee and tea are known contributors to calcium loss through urine, no matter how much milk is added to them. Another disadvantage can be seen in the context of kidney stones, which are formed due to high levels of calcium in the kidneys. This high level is the cause of a high-protein diet and a low rate of calcium absorption in the blood.

These are some of the disadvantages of calcium in milk. However, there is no better source of calcium than plain milk, especially for children and adolescents. Calcium is vital for muscle and bone development and for the prevention of osteoporosis in women and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer in old age. These diseases are not noticed until late at which time it is difficult to cure them or even provide temporary relief.

To receive adequate amounts of calcium, we all need to consume calcium-rich supplements on a regular basis. These supplements have no side effects and are known to provide many health benefits. Especially those made with coral calcium that are easier to absorb than others and prevent many diseases, such as depression in women, kidney stones, muscle cramps, premenstrual syndrome and frequent headaches.
