2009 Earth Ox in a Year of Fire

2009 is the year of the earth ox from the perspective of Chinese astrology. The element that cycles every two years is known as the heavenly stem; so there are oxen of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Variations in the celestial stem influence one’s personality, which explains why not all oxen (persons or years) are the same.

The earthly branch is the animal, one of the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. The ox is considered second in the hierarchy, following the rat. 2009 is based on the Gregorian calendar, while the Chinese calendar is 4707. The ox is sometimes also called a cow or buffalo.

Ox years usually represent hard work. Think of the animal in its natural environment. It works alone or with others and stays true to its course. The Ox is conservative, focused and serious. His motto is “I will”, which can literally result in a test of will.

The stubborn ox defies the feng shui fire year (usually brings out a more social, gregarious and ambitious side). On the surface, the earth and fire elements of Feng Shui complement each other; however, earth reduces fire (think of your exploration days: earth on fire to put it out). Also, the true nature of the ox is earth, so this year is a double year of earth over fire. The Earth itself can resist change, but it comes back after there is time to process. The double ground will resist strongly.

I can’t help but compare it to the presidential election here in the US Obama, whose motto has long been “Change We Can Believe In”, has changed his motto to “Change We Need”. I think most people agree that we can’t survive more of the same and that the economy would be more stable if there had been more accountability and oversight. Will we learn from the past? Will there be a battle of wills? I think so, regardless of who wins the election. It will be interesting to see how it plays out, and the new president has his hands full. The Year of the Ox will demand a methodical approach and measurable results.

Businesses on “Earth” will do quite well. They include real estate, recruitment, food industry, agriculture, household products, and practical clothing. Energy implies business consolidation, which is usually resolved with layoffs. Next month’s article, 2009 Feng Shui and the Year of Fire, will reveal another layer of complexity. Earth years can also bring about a serious search for spirit and a greater focus on family. It’s fun to validate this theory by looking at history. The Chinese astrological calendar has a 60-year cycle, so the last time we experienced the energy of the earth ox was in 1949.

Events that occurred in 1949: Mao Tse Tung’s army marches towards Nanking; a bill is introduced to relocate African Americans “equally” across the country; Truman institutes a policy of aid to underdeveloped countries; flight records are made; NATO begins; The Republic of Ireland is created; Siam becomes Thailand; Chinese communists take Shanghai; Orwell’s 1984 is published; The Supreme Court rules that evidence gathered through illegal searches and seizures can still be used in prosecution; apartheid begins by law in South Africa; Willie Mayes debut; Vatican excommunicates communists; seven UFOs are tracked in three pairs with one behind for ten minutes; Ingrid Bergman divorces and leaves Hollywood; Truman announces that Russia has The Bomb; Mao Tse Tung becomes president of China; and Chiang Kai-shek’s government flees to Taiwan.

All the King’s Men won Best Picture. Let’s look at some of the births that year. Some believe that we need to see where we came from in order to see where we are going (ie, lessons turned into opportunities). How have these people lived their lives? Think objectively about the impact they have had: George Forman, Robert Palmer, Steve Perry, Erik Estrada, Patrick Duffy, Jessica Lange, Billy Joel, Hank Williams, Jr., Lionel Richie, Meryl Streep, Lindsay Wagner, Maureen McGovern, Richard Gere , Joe Theisman, Ed Begley, Jr., Twiggy, Bruce Springsteen, Sigourney Weaver, Bruce Jenner, Richard Dreyfuss, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Shaffer, Garry Shandling, Jeff Bridges, Tom Waits, Maurice and Robin Gibb, Susan Lucci, and Sissy Espaciok. When you think of oxen, these people are famous, but for the most part they keep to themselves.

Every animal in Chinese astrology has an opposite animal. For the ox this is the ram (or sheep). Both are earth-related animals, which implies serious earth-related symptoms, such as earthquakes. With underlying yin fire, a volcano can also erupt. Other animals related to the earth are the dragon and the dog. Dogs, dragons, oxen and sheep should avoid harsh terrestrial environments, such as mountains and deserts, during the months of earth and fire (February 5-March 6, May 6-June 6, July 7-September 8 , November 7-December 7), and when your astrological sign is vulnerable (we provide this information as part of our monthly gratuity).

Does life stop because it’s not a particularly good year? Of course not. This is useful information that enables success. If your energy is low this year, put off strategic decisions and major purchases for a better time. You can be sure that I check power patterns and other conditions in my planning process.

This influence of the land of the ox also brings health precautions, such as cancer and liver problems. If you are a drinker, do so in moderation. You will find that DUI (driving under the influence) will be served with a stricter punishment. Purge your body of free radicals. Explore antioxidant agents like vitamins, fresh fruits and vegetables, and tea. The earth also represents the abdomen, stomach, immune system, spleen, joints, hands, and shoulders. Take care of your stomach and stretch your body to help with joint and shoulder pain.
